What to Expect

A garbage disposal is one of those appliances nobody thinks about until the sink fills with gray water or the unit starts humming and goes nowhere. If you are weighing a repair against replacing a garbage disposal, or you are adding one to a kitchen that never had it, that is the work we do. We handle disposal repair, replacement, and new garbage disposal installation for homes across Jefferson County, Orange County, Hardin County, and the rest of the Golden Triangle, from the Neches River to the Sabine. Most of these calls are short, and the first job is deciding honestly whether the unit you have is worth saving.

Four Symptoms and What Each One Usually Means

Humming but not spinning: the motor has power but the grinding plate is stuck. Something hard, like a bone, a fruit pit, or a bottle cap, is wedged against it. This is often fixable by freeing the plate, and it is not a reason to buy a new unit. Dead silence when you flip the switch: check the red reset button on the bottom of the unit first. If it pops back and the disposal runs, the motor overheated and tripped. If it keeps tripping, or nothing happens at all, the problem may be the outlet, the switch, or a failed motor. Leaking: the location of the drip tells you the cause. A leak at the top flange is usually a worn seal or mounting problem. A leak at the drain connections is usually a loose or worn fitting. A leak from the body or the bottom of the unit means the housing has failed, and that one is a replacement, not a repair. Slow draining or a bad smell: this is often buildup in the drain line past the disposal, not the disposal itself. If the whole sink is slow, it is a drain problem and we will treat it as one.

When Replacing a Garbage Disposal Makes More Sense

A repair is worth it when the cause is a jam, a loose fitting, or a worn seal on a unit that otherwise runs well. Replacement is the better call when the housing leaks, the motor has burned out, the grinding parts are worn smooth, or the unit has been repaired before and failed again. When a disposal has to come out, we match the new one to how your kitchen is used. A household that cooks every night and a single person who rarely does need different horsepower and different build quality. We will walk through the options with you and tell you what we would put in our own kitchen. There is no pressure to buy the biggest one on the shelf. The install itself covers removing the old unit, setting the mounting assembly, connecting the drain and the dishwasher line, wiring or plugging in the power, and testing for leaks before we leave.

Adding a Disposal Where There Was None

A new garbage disposal installation takes a little more planning than a swap. The sink needs a standard drain opening, there has to be a switch or outlet in a practical place, and the drain line has to be sized and sloped so it carries the extra solids away. Older kitchens around Beaumont and Port Arthur often sit on older drain lines, and an older line with buildup clogs faster once a disposal starts sending food into it. We look at the line under the sink and the run behind the wall before we commit to the install. If the line is already in poor shape, you should hear that before the disposal goes in, not after the first clog. If you are remodeling the kitchen, we can set up the disposal as part of the plumbing rough-in. Tell us about the project, and see our remodel plumbing page for how we work with other trades.

What Not to Put Down It

A disposal is not a trash can. The things that cause most service calls are the same few items. Along the Gulf Coast, where many kitchens see seafood boils and fish fry leftovers, shells and fish bones are a regular source of jams. Grease, oil, and fat go down warm and liquid, then cool and coat the pipe. Over months they build into a blockage that no disposal can grind through. Coffee grounds pack into a dense sludge. Pasta, rice, and bread swell with water and form a paste. Fibrous scraps such as celery, corn husks, and onion skins wrap around the grinding parts. Bones, pits, and shells are too hard for the typical residential unit. Never put your hand into a disposal, and never use drain chemicals in a sink that has one. If the drain behind the disposal backs up, that is a line problem and our residential drain cleaning crews can clear it properly.

Garbage Disposal Repair and Installation FAQ

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?
If the problem is a jam, a loose fitting, or a worn seal on a unit that otherwise works, repair is usually enough. If the body is leaking, the motor is dead, or it has failed more than once, replacement is the better value. We will tell you which one it is after we look at it.
My disposal hums but the blades will not turn. Is it broken?
Often it is just jammed. Turn the power off, then free the grinding plate from underneath with the correct tool or from above with tongs, never with your hand. Press the reset button once it spins freely. If it still hums, call us.
Can you install a disposal in a sink that never had one?
In most cases, yes. We check the sink opening, the power, and the drain line first, because a drain that is already marginal can clog once ground food is added.
Is a leaking disposal an emergency?
A slow drip is not, but water under the sink can damage cabinets quickly, so do not wait long. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, if it is getting worse or you cannot shut it off.
Do you give estimates on disposal replacement?
Yes, we offer free estimates. The unit you choose and the condition of the existing connections are what shape the job.
